Nutrition Farming Talk this Wednesday, April 11th

Here are some more fantastic results from Susan, who is a student in the Perfect Soil™ Certificate Course.  Remember, from my last blog post, the broccoli at the back of the kale beds?  They have matured, and here are some pictures of the comparison.  Susan says, of herself and her gardening friends, “We are thrilled.”

Susan made every effort to have a good comparison trial, such as planting the seeds from the same seed packet, at the same time, watering the same, etc.  The difference was the fertilization according to a Nutrition Grown™ soil analysis, which is part of the Beyond Organic Growing System™ (BOGS™).  Great work, Susan!

Side-by-Side Comparison Trial Kale Beds

One of my students in the Perfect Soil Certificate Course, Susan, recently shared her results of a side-by-side comparison trial of the Beyond Organic Growing System(TM).  The control bed was fertilized/amended as she had done typically in the past with organic-type amendments.  The beds were planted on consecutive days with kale and broccoli starts from the same seed packs.  Every attempt was made to be as consistent as possible in every way except the fertilization method–same sizes of beds, same number of plants, same spacing, same irrigation, same mulch, etc.

Here are the results with the control bed first and the Beyond Organic bed next (as captioned):

VIDEO: Trees are Dying Everywhere, We’re Next

Ten years ago, when I was working on my PhD at Colorado State University, I visited the Rocky Mountain National Park.  Dying trees everywhere! About half of the forest appeared dead.  The question was “Why?”.  It has been blamed on pine bark beetles proliferating due to warmer than usual winters.  My thought at the time, which I shared with a fellow graduate student who was focusing on the problem, was that it may have something to do with the enormous rise in the use of electromagnetic frequencies.

Ohia and other trees are dying here in Hawaii forests.  This is blamed on a fungal disease.  The disease condition is termed “Rapid Ohia Death”.  Could it be more than just a fungus?

The scenario repeats itself around the world, with forests, fruit trees, nut trees, vineyards, and trees in parks.  What has changed in the environment?  We’ve had extremes of weather throughout millennia.  Why can’t the trees cope with this?

Fortunately, trees given extra TLC (tender loving care) do respond well.  Trees that have the nutrients they need have a much greater coping ability.  Do you have a tree that needs some TLC?  Think about having its soil tested with a comprehensive soil analysis, and giving it the specific types and amounts of nutrients it needs.  You can also help it bounce back quickly with foliar nutrient sprays that are customized for your ailing tree by using a leaf tissue analysis.  Well nourished, healthy trees do not succumb to insects and diseases.

Trees are critical to life as we know it.  Time to make some changes!

Happy New Year and a White Christmas video from Hawaii!

Last blog, just before Christmas, I had a snapshot of snow-capped Mauna Kea, in the northern part of the Big Island.  For Christmas, I went down to my new land at South Point, and it was a glorious, clear day with a full view of snow-capped Mauna Loa!  If you recall from last post, Mauna Loa, which means “long mountain”, is the largest cubic volume mountain in the world.  It is nearly 14,000 feet high, and still considered an active volcano.  Fortunately, my land is in Lava Zone 6, where it is highly unlikely to be affected by a lava flow.

I hope you have some amazing plans for 2018.  I’m planning to build on my land, and then have a Nutrition Grown(TM) orchard and garden, of course. Plus some horses!

A White Christmas in Hawaii?

Mauna Kea with a blanket of snow for a white Christmas!  Snapped yesterday on my way to the Nutrition Farming for Hawaii research and demonstration center.

Yes, we get snow every year on Mauna Kea, which means “white mountain”, and on Mauna Loa, which means “long mountain”.  These mountains are nearly 14,000 feet high.  Mauna Loa is the largest cubic volume mountain in the world, and still considered an active volcano.  We are blessed on the Big Island with 11 of the 13 climates in the world, from rain forests to rocky deserts, and warm shorelines to frigid mountain tops.  This makes for an extremely diverse agricultural paradise that I am hoping someday will be a major showcase for a huge number of Nutrition Grown™ crops.

Proof: Nutrition Farming Project Improves Soil

Nutrition Farming for Hawaii Research and Demonstration Garden–First Season

Nutrition Farming for Hawaii is a grant-funded project located at HIP Agriculture in Kapa`au, Hawaii and fiscally sponsored by the North Kohala Community Resource Center (NKCRC).  The aim is to increase food nutritional content.  This starts with improving the soil.

This spring, our ¼-acre research and demonstration garden was fertilized according to a Nutrition Grown™ soil analysis. (Click here for more about analyses.)  The land is old sugarcane land, and is unbalanced. As you can see in the chart below, there were many values that needed improvement.

The follow-up analysis, 6 months after initial fertilizing, showed significant improvements of nearly every parameter.  Correcting soil imbalances takes time, usually years.  Only small amounts of certain nutrients can be applied at one time, otherwise the beneficial microbial life in the soil is overwhelmed.  (Please note that soils vary greatly from place to place, often even on the same property, so these values will not be the same as those of other nearby properties.)

If you have been following our blogs, you will have seen that our produce was laboratory analyzed and compared to USDA values for nutritional content.  Our produce has well outpaced typical produce in nutritional content on nearly every parameter measured, even in our first year.
